Synopsis for "The Plague of...the Locust!"
Jean is leaving the school to attend Metro College. Elsewhere, the Locust demonstrates his ability to make gigantic insects! Alerted by a radio report, the X-Men rush to investigate these 'mutant' insects. The Locust abandons the scene unobserved, and the X-Men tangle with the locusts he created. They capture one to bring back with them to the mansion. At Metro College, Professor August Hopper comes off as a kook at a college eatery. Returning to his lab, we learn that he is the Locust, having perfected a device capable of growing insects to enormous size. At the mansion, the X-Men learn that the giant insects are not mutants, but their size is artificially induced - they set off to locate the person responsible. They battle the Locust to a standstill at yet another cornfield, and both leave as the national guard arrives to deal with the giant insects. They spot the locust's RV, and Professor X in disguise tries to reason with him. The Locust takes off, and runs into the X-Men yet again, where battle is joined. Ultimately undone by his own insects, and the Locust is convinced of the error of his ways.
Notes
- This issue is reprinted in many other comics and books, see references for more info.[1]
Trivia
- We find out in this issue that the original team of X-Men graduated from Xavier's school in X-Men #7.
- There is a note by Stan Lee and the "gang" upon some of the first panels of seeing the Locust. It states that the Locust has hints of having a fascist fixation. It then asks if any psychologist readers would forward their thoughts on that analysis to the Marvel editors.
- One panel of the story shows a clearly defined Johnny Storm and Wyatt Wingfoot at Metro College, which they attend. Directly below their picture, though, is an arrowed message box that states it is not a picture of them and that they are in the Himalayas. It is possible that this is an editing trick made after the picture had already been made and to save having to redraw the panel.
