Synopsis for "Like a Phoenix, From the Ashes"
The Starcore shuttle carrying the X-Men crashes onto a runway at New York's JFK airport[1] and skids into Jamaica Bay, breaking up in the process. The X-Men, minus Jean Grey, emerge from the water. A few minutes later, Phoenix arises from the water, then collapses. Professor X uses his mental powers to cover the X-Men's escape although Storm and Nightcrawler use their powers and an image inducer to change their look, respectively.
Later, at a hospital while keeping vigil on Jean, Professor X explains to Moira MacTaggart that extensively using his mental powers brings on strong dreams. After getting good news about Jean's prognosis, Professor X orders the rest of the X-Men to take a forced vacation. Banshee reveals that he has inherited the family estate, and offers it for a vacation spot. The rest of the team joins him and travels to Ireland. Just as they begin to relax and enjoy themselves, they fall into a trap and realize they are the prisoners of Black Tom and Juggernaut. Storm, unnerved by the underground location, freaks out.
Notes
- The events of this issue have been retconned such that it is not Jean Grey who arises out of the water, but rather a Phoenix Force duplicate of her. This is Jean's last appearance until Fantastic Four #286.
- This issue is reprinted in many other comics and books, see references for more info.[2]
- Nightcrawler used Tony Stark's Image Inducer to disguise himself as the 1930's movie star Errol Flynn while at the airport crash and in the hospital.
Trivia
- With this issue, Marvel raised the cover price to 30 cents.
- Storm can apparently change her clothing by re-polarizing the unstable molecules and make it turn into new clothing.
- This is the first time Wolverine reveals he is attracted to Jean Grey.
