Synopsis for "Basic!"
This issue opens with Wolverine in the Australian Outback some unspecified time in the past. Giving into his animal instincts he hunts down a wild boar and begins to feast on it, meanwhile having a flashback to the first time the father of the woman he loved (Mariko) defeated him - embarrassing him and calling him an animal. Out of nowhere Storm appears and calms Wolverine's nerves, leading him to an old Aborigine, called Gateway, who can open portals to anywhere in the world. Wolverine jumps through one of these portals leaving Storm behind.
We're then brought back to the present in Madripoor. A fight between Roughouse and Wolverine rages on in the streets, eventually ending in Wolverine's victory. While inside the Princess Bar those who placed bets on the fight collect their winnings and Wolverine celebrates over a drink with Tyger, an unconscious Roughouse is haggled over by General Coy and an unknown man, tall and wearing a dark green coat and hat.
That night at the Royal Palace, Police Chief Tai and Prince Baran discuss the matter of a shipment of cocaine coming out of Central America found by Wolverine at customs and seized by the police. As it turns out the shipment was for General Coy, Prince Baran asks Tai to make sure that the cocaine is returned to its point of origin. When Tai leaves the same man who haggled with Coy over Roughouse reveals himself from the shadows. The Prince and the unknown man go on to discuss the deal that was just made, the stranger admits that the shipment to Coy was a mistake and that his employer is more than willing to pay for its return. He gives the Prince a bag of money and then leaves.
The next morning Wolverine awakens and stands out on the balcony of an apartment - Tyger asleep in the bed just inside. As he stands there contemplating his own questions and reflecting on Madripoor he catches the smell of the cocaine he had just uncovered the other day. The scent is coming from a truck below which Wolverine makes no hesitation to follow along the rooftops of Lowtown.
When the truck finally stops at the docks, not only is the cocaine shipment moved into a boat but also the unconscious and restrained body of Roughouse. The stranger then exist the vehicle, pays the lackeys he hired to handle the shipment and Roughouse, and heads out to sea in a small boat.
The reader is then told the story of a man named Hammer Cody, a once heavyweight fighter turned drug fiend, and how one day in a fit of drug induced rage he went nuts in the streets of New York - killing some people, destroying anything he could find, etc. When Daredevil arrived on the scene, Cody was near impossible to take down until finally after nearly knocking out Daredevil and taking quite a few hits himself he finally collapsed - dead.
On board the boat the unknown man turns out to be the one recounting the story to a restrained and reluctant Roughouse. The man finally introduces himself as Geist - a man half human and half cybernetic creation. Geist goes on to talk about experiments and Roughouse being a subject. Obviously, Geist intends to use the cocaine - augmented with some other chemical or drug - on Roughouse. As the issue comes to a close, Geist removes one of his cybernetic hands and replaces it with a long blade while talking about "adjustments" needed to be made. Outside, Wolverine hangs by the chain of the anchor, working his way up onto the ship.
Notes
This is the very first issue of the Wolverine series that begins to use the name "Bloodscream" instead of "Bloodsport" for the character of Zachariah Ravenscraft
