Synopsis for "The Five Nightmares (Part I of IV) - Armageddon Days"

In Tabora, Africa, three suicide bombers bearing hi-tech weaponry unleash an attack in a crowded marketplace killing over ninety people. Word of the attack reaches Tony Stark who returns to the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier for an update from Dum Dum Dugan and Maria Hill. Dugan suspects that the bombers may be linked to a terrorist cell known as Advanced Genocide Mechanics. Maria Hill show Tony a device recovered from the blast site. Stark wants to personally lead the mission to take down A.G.M.

Meanwhile at Jones-Reynolds-Jones World Headquarters in New York, young Ezekiel Stane makes an impromptu visit to a company board meeting. He reminds the board members how he has used their money to create state of the art bioweaponry for them, but now he needs more. When the committee members refuse, Ezekiel reveals how he has used their resources to upgrade his hypothalamus giving him a surplus of bio-energy that he can rechannel for other uses. Demonstrating this ability, he projects blasts of energy from the tips of his fingers, killing the board members. He then leaps out the window into a waiting vehicle.

Back on the Helicarrier, Tony holds a video conference with Jim Rhodes. He discovers that the trace evidence left behind in Africa was taken from stolen Stark technology. He has been keeping tabs on every known super-villain utilizing armor-based weaponry and thus far, none of them have been active in Africa. He gets a lead on an A.G.M. factory and suits up. As Iron Man, he raids the facility and takes out a squad of A.G.M. agents. As the battle concludes, Pepper Potts transmits a photograph taken from the Tabora massacre into Tony's armor. Tony is horrified to discover that someone else has reverse engineered his own designs into a cheap and disposable weapon.

Notes

Variant cover by Joe Quesada
  • This issue shipped on May 7th, 2008 to coordinate with the world premiere of the 2008 Iron Man feature film. This issue was published with six alternate covers, including a cover featuring a photo screen capture from the film. Artwork for the variant covers was provided by Salvador Larroca, Joe Quesada, Marko Djurdjevic, Bob Layton and Billy Tan.
  • Tony Stark has been extremely mindful of any villains who have ever used misappropriated Stark technology. This fear stems back to events originally chronicled during the "Armor Wars" storyline from Iron Man (Volume 1) #225-232.

Trivia
