Synopsis for "The Monster and the Madman!"

The Hulk, as well as his seldom-seen alter ego Bruce Banner, is dead (again). His friends mourn his passing, seen in the previous issue. However, Banner is still alive, a brainwashed captive of Doctor Doom in his castle in Latveria. He is hard at work creating a new gamma bomb for the greater glory of Latveria. When Valeria mentions the Hulk, Banner begins to lose control, and Doom uses his tranquilizer ray to restore Banner.

Doom has a devious plan. To further his regional ambitions, he plans to send the Hulk into a neighboring country with Banner's gamma bomb strapped to his back, where it will be detonated by remote control near the other country's army. To placate Valeria, however, he will claim that the Hulk stole the bomb and that he (Doom) will humanely detonate it over a remote area. Luckily for the Hulk, Valeria realizes that Doom is up to no good: she convinces a guard to let her speak with Banner, and he reprograms the subliminal inducer that has been brainwashing him. Doom's plan therefore backfires: the bomb actually does explode in a remote area.

While Doom and Valeria are discussing these counter-plots, the Hulk bursts into the castle. Doom's force-field projector fails to stop him. The battle moves outside, where much of the village is reduced to rubble. When a steeple topples toward Valeria, Doom saves her, even when it means turning his back on the Hulk. Realizing he has won this time--and that Valeria has something in common with Betty Ross--the Hulk bounds away.
