Synopsis for "The Hope...and the Slaughter!"

When the Guardians arrive to join the battle, Michael retaliates by destroying their orbiting space station and its lone occupant, Vance Astro. Furious, Nikki attacks Michael, who swats her aside, killing her instantly. A second later, the same fate befalls the speeding Quicksilver. The other Avengers attack in unison, but Michael proves impervious to their powers. One by one, the heroes fall, dead or unconscious. Finally, Thor, Iron Man, Starhawk, and the Vision mount a concerted assault. At the moment of truth, Michael turns to Carina for support, but she hesitates, uncertain, and suddenly, inexplicably, Michael falls dead. A maddened Carina then unleashes her own powers, slaying all but Thor. Facing the Thunder God in battle, Carina withdraws her own defenses and wills his hammer to strike, then falls dead next to her mate. Moondragon, having probed Michael's mind and perceived his noble intentions, reveals that their foe had used the last of his power to restore the dead and wounded. As Thor becomes Dr. Don Blake and begins work on his patients, Moondragon alone retains her memory of the battle in which the Avengers were perhaps the true villains.
