Synopsis for "Avengers Assemble!"

Yellowjacket and the Wasp are released from the hospital just in time to attend the Avengers meeting at which the group will decide on a new membership roster. Unknown to the others, however, Thor has recently been forced to confront the fact that he alone is as powerful as his teammates combined, and he no longer feels comfortable as a member. Thus, the Thunder God calls the gathering to order and, to everyone's surprise, announces he is taking a leave of absence and passes the chairmanship gavel to Iron Man. Outside, a large crowd excitedly awaits the meeting's outcome, while a TV newscaster reviews the team's colorful history.

  • This story is the end of Steve Englehart's long and significant tenure as Avengers scribe. He is replaced by Gerry Conway next issue.
  • This is the first appearance of the Iron Man Armor MK V in the Avengers. The modifications are noted by Thor in this issue.
