Hello im new here was going through some things on the lgbt categories and noticed that homosexuality includes bisexuality. There is also a page that is specificaly for bisexuals one would like to state I myself am bisexual before going through this and asking for any changes i dont mean to offend and I in no way view myself as a greatly knowledgeable person on all lgbt matters, or as a spokesperson for all bisexuals. - The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ceroes (talk • contribs).

1. I would like the homosexual category to only include homosexuals.(as this is not a topic that can be debated as bisexuals are attracted to both sexes at varying degrees but not a singular sex(whats between your legs) such as heterosexuals or homosexuals.

While we fully recognize the difference between those who identify as gay/lesbian and those who identify as bisexual, we have no need to change anything, because there's nothing to change. If you look closely, you'll notice that none of the 18 characters in the Bisexual category are found in the Homosexual category, and vice versa. They are separated very clearly. --Spencerz (talk) 17:50, May 28, 2013 (UTC)

1)may I ask your reasoning for putting bisexual as a subcategory of homosexual also.

also you were correct and I had a case of stupidity for not making sure they are from the same reality

It's listed as a subcategory because, for the purposes of the site, it is one. While it might not be the most politically correct way of listing things, it's the best way to link them together in our site.
See, originally, all non-heterosexual characters were simply lumped together in a single category called "LGBT Characters", because there were just so few of them. Openly non-heterosexual characters, while first appearing in the mid-80s, are still a fairly new concept to comics, and really were not common until the later part of the 2000s, especially bisexual characters, or anything along the lines of transsexual characters or the like. Eventually users pointed out the need for more definition in the categories, so it was split to Homosexual (gay and lesbian), Bisexual (bisexual, pansexual and omnisexual) and the somewhat related Transgender (transgender, transsexual and hermaphrodite) characters.

1) thank you for the kind/prompt reponse

2) I mostly agree but I still dont understand why its listed as a subcategory is it because they have similiar interests its more confusing me although I understand your want for a clear organization of information.

3)doesn't listing bisexuality as a subcategory and not including transgendered also make it more confusing; and than shouldn't homosexuality, heteroseuality and transgendered be listed under bisexuality;and transgendered have the sub categorys bisexuality homosexuality, heterosexuality. At least because i believe your listing it as a subcategory because its a sexual identity. - The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ceroes (talk • contribs).

It shouldn't be listed as a subcategory of Category:Homosexual Characters, and really there is no reason for it to be. The category structure is better off left like this:
  • Category:Characters by Sexual Preference
    • Category:Bisexual Characters
    • Category:Homosexual Characters
    • Category:Pansexual Characters
Transgender is something else again and a bit of an odd fit in that line up, although I can't think of a better place to put it at the moment. But back on topic, I agree that bisexual characters should be categorised as "Characters by Sexual Preference" only. As it is, the branch is helping to keep the category tree messy by branching and feeding back into the trunk. -- WarBlade (talk) 09:00, May 29, 2013 (UTC)

1) Wouldnt it also be good to include heterosexual as a category because aren't some characters known to be heterosexual?

2) Warblade just to clarify you believe that the bisexual should not be listed as a sub category and you think it makes the organization messy? sorry with some of the technical info i really didn't understand everything. - The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ceroes (talk • contribs).

  1. On the heterosexual category, no, there are thousands of articles and that would mean a huge rework for something that is implicit for most characters. To exaggerate the point, it would be like saying "Humans with two eyes." Categories shouldn't ever be generated just to counter-balance other categories. They exist to act as a filter for some recognisable trait of an article's subject.
  2. The category structure is abysmal on the Marvel Database for various reasons. One small problem is highlighted by this situation of having a category (bisexual) categorised as both characters by sexuality, and by homosexual characters. On most wikis the standard is each category itself is categorised only once - this allows a wiki's category structure to act as a navigation system where everything tracks back to one base category, a root category that branches out to all other categories, much like a tree. On the Marvel Database this root category is called Category:Marvel Database - Many other wikis on Wikia have Category:Browse instead. On wikis where multiple categories are permitted for categories, this "tree" structure can become a tangle with the branches feeding into each other so that a reader might potentially navigate around in circles rather than just linearly up and down the tree. Does that make sense?
As a side note, can you please sign your talk page edits. Four tildes will do it, eg. ~~~~. Thanks. -- WarBlade (talk) 22:14, May 29, 2013 (UTC)

Ok thank you and I will sign from now on Ceroes (talk) 17:40, May 30, 2013 (UTC)

Category name[]

I'd like to make a suggestion that the name of this category be reconsidered. The term "homosexual" is generally considered outdated and carries negative connotations and can even be considered offensive. Modern recommendations are to use the term "gay". The name of this category would be better as "Gay Characters". — Bryan Landry (talk) 12:58, February 8, 2015 (UTC)

It is more accurate to use Binomial nomenclature rather then a single nations colloquialisms.JimmyMoriarty (talk) 13:31, February 8, 2015 (UTC)

It's not a colloquialism that is unique to one country. The term gay is used and recognized all over the world and in different languages. The term gay is universally recognized. — Bryan Landry (talk) 04:06, February 9, 2015 (UTC)

When was it stated that "homosexual" was outdated ? Both gay and homosexual can carry negative connotations or be thought be to offensive, whether people are acting like biggots or not while saying those words. Can't say for anglophone countries, but in France, both words fits the politically correct (but are used by biggots as well, who also use really derogatory terms instead).
Gay can be thought to be uniquely for men (but I think it is sometimes used for women). At least with "Homosexual", it is clear it is unisex. But if there indeed some "official" statement about it, I'm open to suggestions (the only "statements" (dropped here and there on the internet) I've seen was "LGBT" which isn't accurate enough (even if it carries the words gay, lesbian.., so we could turn the category into "Gay and Lesbian Characters...)).
