Synopsis for "Twilight's Last Gleaming"

Black Crow pays Captain America a visit to inform him of a vision that the Star-Spangled Avenger has only 24 hours left to live as the last of the failing Super Soldier Serum in his system will stop his heart. Having been expecting it for some time, Cap gets his affairs in order the best he can with his final day. Hoping to get one last shot at the Red Skull, he visits Crossbones in prison to see if he's willing to share any information about his former employer. Crossbones is completely uncooperative, which brings Cap to reflect on one more regret on his list -- that he could not convince any of his enemies to reform in the end. Oddly enough, when he returns to Avengers Mansion, it's Batroc the Leaper he ends up spending his last waking hours with. Batroc had come investigating the murderer of his comrade, Machete, and is disappointed to learn that Captain America already took care of it recently. When he finds out his rival is dying, he expresses his sincere condolences and regret, and comes close to convincing Cap that at least one of his rogues was prepared to make a change for the better.

That night, after Captain America has laid down to rest, the Avengers find his empty armor lying on his bed. His body has mysteriously disappeared.

He has since inked issues in Captain America. However, the majority of his long work on this title has been as a colourist. Roussos was approaching his 80th birthday when he coloured this issue.
  • This issue contains a letters page, "Let's Rap With Cap". Letters are pubished from Harry Simon and a farewell, nostalgic letter from Mark Gruenwald.
