History

The early history of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants presumably mirrors that of their Earth-616 counterparts.

The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants was a radical group of mutants brought together by infamous mutant terrorsit Magneto. Magneto was convinced that an end to prejudice against mutants was impossible, as humans could not even make peace with each other. He instead believed that mutants needed to seize their rightful place as rulers of humanity.[1]

When his former friend and now rival Charles Xavier formed the X-Men to oppose him, Magneto formed the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. In choosing the name "Brotherhood of Evil Mutants", Magneto hoped to force Xavier into the role of judge over mutantkind, hoping that this would prompt ever more mutants to seek out Magneto to escape Xavier and that this would eventually lead to Xavier and his X-Men themselves joining him.[1]

The original Brotherhood would eventually dissolve. Many years after their creation, the entirety of humanity began to rapidly mutate. When the world's governments deployed Sentinels in a desperate attempt to control the spiraling mutant population, Magneto struck, luring the Sentinels into an ambush and destroying them in the Savage Land. From their remains, he created Sentinel City, a mutant refuge in the Savage Land, and invited Toad to sit by his side as an honored citizen, though Toad would seize the first opportunity presented to him to betray Magneto.[2]

In the chaos that followed the mutations of humanity, former Brotherhood members Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver both lost their lives. Mastermind was also dead by this point.[3] [1]
