Synopsis for "Where Monsters Dwell"

Lord Tantalus orders one of his sons to kidnap a geneticist, and the other son disguises himself to stop the kidnapping. Unfortunately, Pelops pays the ultimate price for betraying his father.

Notes

  • Although Avengers #370 established that Lucian (a.k.a. Blackwulf) was a member of Kro's Delta Network of Deviants, this story makes it clear that the antagonists and many of the protagonists in this series are members of a certain "evolutionary offshoot of humanity." However, the term "Deviant" will not be used in-story until Blackwulf #9 and the fact that some of these characters are Deviants from alien planets will first be implied in the next issue. In fact, to this day it is still unclear if any of the Deviant characters introduced in this series are fully from Earth.
  • When confronting the Peacekeepers, Blackwulf (Pelops) refers to himself and his team as "Blackwulf and his Underground Legion." This is odd because the team is called simply "The Underground" every other time its name is mentioned in this series. Even only three pages earlier, when Tantalus spoke of them, he referred to them as Blackwulf's "accursed Underground."
  • In this issue, Mammoth quotes something that he says Sun Tzu "told" him. This is possibly significant because, if he had read it in The Art of War, then he would have said it was something that Sun Tzu "tells us." Saying what he did implies that Mammoth was personally told that quote by Sun Tzu and, since Sun Tzu died in the early 5th century BC, that would imply that Mammoth was over 2,400 years old.
  • Wraath calls Mammoth "my temporal brother."
