Synopsis for "The Promise"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Spider-Man #71

After some of his men failed to eliminate Hammerhead, Don Fortunato has decided to make an example of them. To show his other minions the price of failure, Fortunato has the two men dropped down a well, at the bottom is a pack of hungry wolves that devour the two men. Turning to the observers, he warns his men that any further failures will be treated the same way.

Meanwhile, at the New York University Medical Center, Peter Parker clings to life as his body is wracked with seizures due to an unknown illness. As his wife Mary Jane watches on, Curt Connors and his team of doctors manage to stabilize Peter for the time being.[Continuity 1] Mary Jane then pulls Connors aside and asks for the truth. Sadly, Curt doesn't think they will be able to cure Peter and he may not live through the night. Putting on a brave face, Mary Jane goes back into the room and spends time with her husband who is exhausted after his ordeal. He learns that Ben hasn't arrived yet and Mary Jane tells him to get some rest, promising to be by his side when he wakes up. At that moment, Ben Reilly is out as Spider-Man investigating a strange train robbery that appears to have been committed by the Trapster. This is yet another in a series of robberies, apparently committed by other criminals including the Ringer and the Shocker. This leaves the wall-crawler to wonder if all of these criminals are working together.[Continuity 2] Realizing that he is late to meet up with Peter and Mary Jane at the hospital, Spider-Man swings off to the hospital.

At that moment, an emergency room doctor ducks into a room to get some rest after a particularly busy night. Unfortunately, his rest is interrupted by Hammerhead who threatens the doctor with a gun and demands immediate medical attention after his encounter with Don Fortunato's men. By this point, Ben Reilly has arrived at Peter room to meet up with his "cousin" and Mary Jane. After sending Mary Jane off to get something to eat, Peter asks Ben to do him a favor.[Continuity 3] Ben tells Peter he will do whatever is asked of him. That's when Peter tells Ben that he is dying, and figures it is due to the cellular degeneration that affects all of the Jackal's clones.[Continuity 4] He asks Ben to look after Mary Jane and his baby after he dies. Ben promises to do just that and a relieved and exhausted Peter Parker slips back asleep.

Meanwhile, Hammerhead's wounds have been patched up and he begins thinking about his next move.[Continuity 5] Peeking out of the hospital room, Hammerhead spots Ben Urich talking on a nearby payphone. Remembering how Urich was present when Fortunato's minions attempt on his life and decide that he and the reporter need to have a talk. Back upstairs, Ben Reilly is leaving Peter's room when he runs into Mary Jane. When he tries to talk to her about what Peter told him, she stops him saying that she needs to believe Peter will pull through this, reminding Ben that they are fighters. Ben understands, hugs Mary Jane and then goes downstairs for coffee. At that moment, outside Ben Reilly's apartment, Jimmy-6 knocks at the door. With his life still in jeopardy, Jimmy needs a place to lay low and decided to take Ben Reilly up on his offer to crash at his place. Fearing that he is being observed, Jimmy uses a pocket knife to pick the lock to Ben's apartment and invites himself in. Back at the medical center, Ben Reilly bumps into Ben Urich. Their talk about Peter's condition is interrupted when suddenly Hammerhead reaches out from the room behind Urich and pulls him in, just as Reilly's spider-sense begins going off. Putting a gun in Urich's face, Hammerhead demands the reporter to tell him what he knows about Don Fortunato's hit on him.

That's when Spider-Man comes crashing into the room to stop him from harming Ben Urich. The wall-crawler is looking forward to talking to Hammerhead about his recent battle with an assassin named Delilah.[Continuity 6] Hammerhead doesn't know what the wall-crawler is talking about but is spoiling for a rematch. That's when the mobster rips open his shirt revealing an exoskeleton he recently started wearing again to boost his powers.[Continuity 7] As the two battle it out, Spider-Man seals off the hallway in webbing to prevent the mobster from grabbing any hostages. When the web-slinger rips off the power packs from Hammerhead's exoskeleton, stripping him of his enhanced strength. Unwilling to surrender, Hammerhead begins shooting his gun. Although Spider-Man dodges the bullets, they strike some nearby oxygen tanks causing an explosion. As Spider-Man recovers from the blast, Hammerhead manages to get away.

That's when he overhears a code blue being called to Peter Parker's room. Fearing the worst, Spider-Man rushes to Peter's room. With his vital signs fading, Peter reminds Ben of his promise. He then tells Mary Jane that he loves her. Peter then begins to black out as his heart monitor begins to flatline.

Synopsis for "Little Deaths"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Spectacular Spider-Man #237

Peter Parker's health has been in deterioration for some time, with his vital signs crashing, Ben Reilly and Peter's wife Mary Jane stand by his bed and wait for the end to come.[Continuity 8] The doctors have done everything they could and now leave the pair to mourn the loss of Peter Parker.[Continuity 9] After Peter flat-lines, Mary Jane and Ben mourn his passing in silence. They then leave the room, when Mary Jane completely breaks down. Back inside, Peter Parker suddenly comes back to life, his body spasming all over. To his surprise, his hands cling to the side of his hospital bed, ripping the material off. In a panic, Peter leaps out of the bed and tosses it across the room with tremendous strength. Losing his balance, Peter trips over his own feet and crashes into the bank of life support machines. the racket causes Ben, Mary Jane, and some nurses to rush into the room. They are all shocked to discover that Peter Parker is alive and well.

Meanwhile, at the Daily Bugle, Joe Robertson and Glory Grant search the ruins of J. Jonah Jameson's office for any clues as to what happened to him. The only thing they are able to find is a file on the Rand Meachum Corporation.[Continuity 10] They are then interrupted by one of the interns who informs them that there is something wrong with one of their news feeds.[Continuity 11] When they go and check, they see the word "onslaught" written over and over across the screen.[Continuity 12] At that moment, Curt Connors is traveling through Manhattan. The overcrowded streets, pollution, and crime make him bitterly wonder the world is becoming and wonders what sort of world he will leave behind for his son, Billy. Seeing an interview of presidential candidate Graydon Creed, who is in another one of his anti-mutant tirades, makes him think that he needs to do something.[Continuity 13] Curt Connors is not the only one concerned about Graydon Creed's potential rise to power, as his concerns are mirrored by Spider-Man as he swings across the city. However, he tries to keep his mind on good things, like Peter being alive. He soon arrives on the scene of a crime that has apparently been committed by Stilt-Man. This is added to another series of robberies apparently committed by the Ringer, Shocker, and Trapster.[Continuity 14] That's when he hears reports of the Lizard on a rampage and goes to the waterfront where the creature has been sighted.

Thinking this is Curt Connors, Spider-Man tries to stop the Lizard, but it manages to escape.[Continuity 15] Knowing that Connors always has an agenda when he is the Lizard, the wall-crawler wonders what the creature is up to and suddenly remembers the Connors was brought in as a specialist for Peter and rushes to the hospital. At the hospital, Peter Parker is being examined by Curt Connors, who is surprised to discover that Parker is back in full health. That's when they hear a fight happening across the street. Looking out the window, Peter and Curt witness as Spider-Man battles the Lizard. This comes as a shock to Peter since Curt Connors has always been the Lizard. Curt is horrified that this creature has followed him and flees from the hospital. Meanwhile, Spider-Man is not doing so well against the Lizard. That's when he is saved by Peter, who has come to help, revealing that his spider-powers are back. However, when the Lizard swats Peter over the side of the building, his fingers fail to cling to the walls and he begins to slip. Spider-Man swings down and rescues him, allowing the Lizard to escape. Spider-Man isn't overly concerned as he knows he can track down Curt Connors later. That's when Peter reveals that whoever this creature is, it is not Curt Connors.

Amazing Spider-Man #1
Amazing Spider-Man Vol 1 1 Title 2

Still looking for a way to use his powers to make money, Spider-Man decides to try and join the Fantastic Four. He enters the Baxter Building, escapes a "plexiglass cage" trap, and battles the four heroes. After explaining his intentions, he learns that the Fantastic Four are a non-profit organization and earn no salaries. He leaves disappointed, vowing to make the group "look like pikers."

Meanwhile, the Chameleon is using his "multi-pocket disguise vest" to infiltrate a defense installation in the Lark Building at the edge of New York City. Later that night, while mulling over the defense plans he has stolen, he hears about Spider-Man's visit to the Fantastic Four's headquarters. He deduces that Spider-Man has no legitimate way to earn a living and must be short of money. He once more infiltrates the defense installation, and, disguised as Spider-Man, steals the remainder of the missile defense plans. Spider-Man, who had been contacted with a phony job offer by the Chameleon on a special frequency that only his Spider-Sense can pick up, arrives at the defense installation just after the Chameleon's departure. The security guards try to capture him, thinking he has stolen the plans.

Evading capture, Spider-Man uses his elastic webbing to sling himself out over the harbor, then spins a web parachute to land safely. He grabs a boat and follows the Chameleon's helicopter to a waiting Soviet submarine. He quickly gains control of the helicopter, and he and the Chameleon return to the Lark Building. The Chameleon disguises himself as one of the security guards to avoid arrest, but after a brief battle, he is captured. Unfortunately, during the battle the guards believe that Spider-Man is the Chameleon in disguise, forcing Spider-Man to flee. He departs, rueful of the way things never seem to turn outright.
