Web of Life continues in Web of Spider-Man #121...

Seriously beaten, the Scarlet Spider lays unconcious on a rooftop as snow swirls down on him.[Continuity 1] When he revives, he is upset that Kaine is after him once again.[Continuity 2] Since both Kaine and the Grim Hunter are after Spider-Man, the Scarlet Spider swings after the two combatants. On another nearby rooftop, Kaine and the Grim Hunter are stare each other down on silence. This silence is broken by Grim Hunter who demands to know why Kaine is also after Spider-Man.[Continuity 3] The assassin does not answer, but he thinks about how everyone who intends to interfere in his plans for Spider-Man must die.

Meanwhile, the Scarlet Spider goes by the home of Peter Parker and his wife Mary Jane to make sure they are safe.[Continuity 4] Seeing the home is deserted, he thinks about how lucky Peter is, picturing his genetic proginator with his wife and it makes him realize how empty his own life is. Certain that the Parkers are at risk of attack, Ben continues his search for Kaine and the Grim Hunter. At that same moment, elsewhere in the city, Seward Trainer returns to his long abandoned lab to set up shop in New York once again. He hopes that he can find Ben Reilly before he gets himself killed.[Continuity 5] The Scarlet Spider continues to hunt for Kaine and the Grim Hutner. As he searches the city, he begins to feel dizzy, and wonders if he has the strength to face two deadly foes at once. When he finds the pair fighting it out in the street. The Scarlet Spider tries to swing down and break up their fight. However, he suddenly passes out mid-swing and falls to the ground. That's when the Grim Hunter blasts Kaine with an energy jolt from his staff. Wanting to continue his hunt for Spider-Man, the Grim Hunter flees the scene. When Kaine recovers, he continues after the Hunter, unaware that the Scarlet Spider has tagged him with a micro-dot tracer.

With no strength to follow after his foes, the Scarlet Spider decides to head back home and finds Seward Trainer waiting for him. After seeing how roughed up Ben looks, Seward is shocked to learn that Kaine has followed Ben to New York City as well. Meanwhile, Kaine continues to search for the Grim Hunter. Suddenly, he is struck with a great deal of pain. He suddenly gets a vision of Mary Jane being murdered. Unfortunately, he doesn't see who is responsible, and is determined to find her and keep her safe.[Continuity 6] Soon, in Central Park, the Grim Hunter picks up Kaine's scent again and realizes that his foe is still after him. Pulling out his radio, the Grim Hunter orders his assistant Gregor to come and extract him from the area. Soon, Kaine ambushes the Grim Hunter and the two resume their fight near the lake. They are interrupted by the Scarlet Spider who has tracked them down with his tracer. After stunning Kaine with some of his stingers, he knocks him onto the ice. when Kaine goes through the ice, the Scarlet Spider leaps in after him. However, when finds no trace of his foe. When he returns to the surface, he discovers that the Grim Hunter has fled as well. With nothing else to do, the Scarlet Spider swings off to find the Parkers and warn them of the danger.

On the other side of the park, the Grim Hunter tries to escape when he is ambushed by Kaine once again. As they fight it out, Gregor arrives in a Humvee to recover the Grim Hunter. Unfortunately, the Grim Hunter is no match for Kaine, who snaps his neck and leaves his mark on the hunter's face. Fleeing the scene, Kaine leaves the Grim Hunter as he dies in Gregor's arms.[Continuity 7]

The Clone Saga continues from Spider-Man: Funeral for an Octopus #3...

The Scarlet Spider is swinging across the city, feeling guilty about how much he is enjoying the thrill of being able to do so. Suddenly, his spider-sense goes off as the image of the Jackal appears before him. Panicking, the Spider lets go of his web-line and falls to the rooftop below. Rolling with the fall, he manages to survive impact but is still haunted by images of the Jackal.[Continuity 8] Ben Reilly is not the only one who is having visions of the Jackal, as the same thing is happening to Peter Parker. Getting ready to go out for dinner with his wife, Mary Jane, Peter finds the sudden vision of his old foe to come as a shock.[Continuity 9] He wonders if this is a lingering side effect of the virus he purged from his system.[Continuity 10] He wonders why he is now seeing visions of the Jackal after so many years.[Continuity 11] When his wife tells Peter to hurry up, Peter is surprised by how she dressed up for the evening. When the two kiss, he is suddenly disturbed by the sudden image of Gwen Stacy that pops in his head and he pulls away.[Continuity 12] When Mary Jane asks what's wrong, he tells her he figures that he is still shaky after being cured of the virus. When she suggests that they cancel their dinner plans, Peter picks her up and carries her up to the roof of their home. He tells her that he wants to celebrate the fact that Mary Jane is pregnant with their child and he wants to focus on the future they will have together.[Continuity 13]

Meanwhile, the Scarlet Spider has been drawn to mountains outside the city, however, he doesn't know why or how. That's when he is confronted by a diminutive man dressed up in a Jackal costume. The being insists that the Spider calls him Jack. Following the stranger, he is led to a massive metal doorway seemingly floating in mid-air. Jack explains that this has been set up years ago by the Jackal and what lays behind that door is the Scarlet Spider's destiny. However, in order to get inside, Jack tells the Spider that he needs to get past its defender. Just then the Scarlet Spider is ambushed by a massive being that looks like Peter Parker. However, this Parker is massive and horribly scarred. At that moment, Peter Parker makes a stop at the Daily Bugle to make arrangements for his insurance coverage while he is off work during Mary Jane's pregnancy. Joe Robertson congratulates Peter for the great news. However, as Peter Parker leaves the building, J. Jonah Jameson emerges from his office with Detective Jacob Raven. Raven swears Jonah to confidence over what they discussed. Jonah, clearly hurt by the news, agrees not to say anything.[Continuity 14] When Joe Robertson asks Jonah who the man is, Jameson tells his friend that he doesn't want to know. Not far away, Peter is waiting for the elevator and thinking about potential names for his children. That's when he is struck with a number of images of emerging from a cloning tank and the Jackal causing him to become dizzy. Jacob Raven helps him up causing Peter's spider-sense begins going off, although he can't figure out why. As his elevator arrives, Peter dismisses Raven's concern for him and abruptly leaves. This causes Jacob to become even more suspicious of Peter Parker.

Meanwhile, Mary Jane is visiting May Parker in the hospital with her Aunt Anna. May is still in a coma after suffering a stroke.[Continuity 15] Anna is happy to hear that Mary Jane is pregnant, and suggests that May dying could be her way of making room for her and Peter's unborn child. As Anna tries to comfort her about the idea of May passing on, they don't notice when May's eyes briefly open and sheds a tear before she goes back into her coma. Back in the mountains, the Scarlet Spider is fighting for his life against the Jackal's Guardian. As he is savagely attacked by the horribly scarred creature he is unaware that Kane is nearby watching the proceeding. Ultimately, the Guardian proves too powerful for the Scarlet Spider and beats the web-slinger into unconsciousness. With the battle over, Jack leads the Guardian back to the doorway, telling him to be prepared for the arrival of the "other one". This "other" is Spider-Man who is now swinging across Manhattan trying to make sense out of the visions that have been appearing in his mind. Suddenly, he sees the image of the Scarlet Spider laying motionless in the snow. Realizing that Ben Reilly is in trouble, Spider-Man swings toward his location intending to rescue him.

This story continues from Web of Spider-Man #122...

The Scarlet Spider lays unconscious on the snowy ground somewhere in the Catskill Mountains. His body is discovered by the assassin known as Kaine. As Kaine examines the body, Scrier arrives and tells Kaine that the Spider is not dead.[Continuity 16] When Kaine tells Scrier to leave him alone, the cloaked figure assures Kaine that he has nothing to fear from him yet and suddenly disappears. Kaine is relieved as he was not ready to deal with Scrier at this time. Suddenly, he detects someone coming and ducks into the shadows again. Soon, Spider-Man arrives on the scene, finding his clone passed out on the ground. Suddenly, the Scarlet Spider comes around, and the two compare notes. Both have been drawn to this location by strange mental pictures of Peter Parker growing in a cloning tank. Spider-Man was able to find his clone thanks to images of the Scarlet Spider that appeared in his head.[Continuity 17] They are soon interrupted by a diminutive man in a Jackal costume named Jack. He tells them that he knows why they have been drawn here but refuses to tell them yet.

The two Spiders chase after him but lose him in the swirling snow. However, what they find instead is a strange door that appears to be floating in mid-air. Examining it, they find handprint scanners and place their hands on them. When the door opens, they find Jack on the other side. Entering, the Scarlet Spider grabs Jack by the throat and demands answers. That's when Spider-Man's spider-sense goes off, but the warning comes too late to prevent them from leaping out before the door closes behind them. Jack then urges the wall-crawlers to follow him deeper into the secret facility, warning them that it is the only way they can see the light of day again.[Continuity 18] Jack takes them to a massive lab facility. Jack says that this is where they were all created and tells them that the Jackal will be joining him soon. Spider-Man finds this hard to believe because he saw the Jackal die. Jack points out that he saw the Scarlet Spider die as well, yet he is alive as well.[Continuity 19] While they are distracted the two Spiders are attacked by a degenerating clone called the Guardian. However, he is only lashing out due to the pain that runs through his body as he degenerates.

Despite Spider-Man's desire to do something, Jack points out that there is nothing they can do and they watch helplessly as the Guardian dies in Jack's arms. That's when Jack removes his Jackal mask revealing that he is a Peter Parker clone as well. He is also suffering from degeneration, telling the two Spiders that this is the fate of all of the clones created by Miles Warren. That's when the Jackal makes his presence known. Emerging from a regeneration tank, saying that Jack and Guardian were his earliest failures, but Spider-Man and the Scarlet Spider are his greatest successes. Having enhanced his body to the peak of physical perfection, the Jackal is able to fight off both Spiders when they try to attack. He then has Jack give him some clothes. As he dresses he tells them that he is not a clone of Miles Warren, but the genuine article.[Continuity 20] He has spend the past five years restructuring his body into a perfect form.[Continuity 21] He goes on to explain that the Miles Warren that appeared to die during their last encounter was a clone that stood in for him.[Continuity 22] The Jackal's mocking finally gets to Spider-Man who attacks his foe. However, he is stopped by the Scarlet Spider, who tells Spider-Man that the only way they are going to get answers as to what is going on is if they let the Jackal talk.

Seeing that Guardian is dead, the Jackal takes a moment to mourn his passing. As he does so, Kaine arrives in the room, watching things from the shadows above. The Jackal explains that they are all Peter Parker or at least genetic duplicates of Parker. That the Scarlet Spider's arrival in the Catskills revived them, but they suffer from degeneration and don't last very long. He leads them a chamber and suggests that both Spider-Man and the Scarlet Spider are both clones, saying that the real Peter Parker could be in the stasis chamber in front of them.[Continuity 23] Spider-Man thinks the Jackal is lying and tries to attack again. When the Scarlet Spider tries to pull him away, Spider-Man fights him off. The wall-crawler refuses to believe that he is a clone especially after he has gotten his life back on track and is expecting a child.[Continuity 24] This revelation comes as a surprise to the Scarlet Spider. However, he is furious at Spider-Man, telling him that he is unable to face the possibility that his being a clone is true. However, Spider-Man refuses to be afraid, pointing out all of the villains he has defeated over the years even in the face of impossible odds.[Continuity 25]

When Spider-Man finally says he can take whatever the Jackal is going to make him face, the Jackal obliges by opening the stasis chamber. However, instead of another Peter Parker, the two Spiders are surprised to discover that it contained a woman that the Jackal claims is the real Gwen Stacy.[Continuity 26]
