Annie, Jean Grey's childhood friend, was hit by a car and killed in front of the future X-Man. The traumatic experience unlocked Jean's telepathic powers, as Jean experienced Annie's emotions as she died. Jean was left in a withdrawn and deeply depressed state, until she was treated by Charles Xavier.

Annie was only ever seen in flashback, as she died when Jean Grey was still a child.
